In case you missed it, we talked with Doug Farren from Ohio State’s National Center of the Middle Market on all things mid-market to give business owners, HR managers and other stakeholders the clarity and confidence to conquer the year ahead. He also walked us through the highlights of the latest Mid Market Indicator Report.

Here's what we learned:   

  • While mid-market is broadly defined as companies from  $10 million to $1 billion, but the National Center of the Middle Market also breaks them into subsegments so organizations can drill down to what similar sized companies are doing, as well the mid-market as a whole.
  • The study has asked the same 5 pillars of questions for a decade now, so you can see trends evolve along with unique questions that reflect the times (Great Recession, pandemic, supply chain, workforce challenges, etc.)
  • The study also reveals how Mid-market businesses are meeting the workforce challenges in different ways from compensation to company perks to workplace flexibility. 
  • Investment dollars are trending away from equipment and physical plant to information technology.
  • Cybersecurity is a growing trend in investment as hackers tend to be “lazy” and see mid-market businesses as easier targets since they have fewer resources to combat the threat
